Notes:
There were a large number of China Trade Artists, who painted ship portraits of Western vessels but did not sign their works. Typical for their paintings is a somewhat monotone style, the green-grey sea and the more or less simple handling of the sky. Often local shipping is shown in the background and in rare case they added a topographical view of the city where they worked. Several of these Chine Trade pictures show an extensive crackle and few pictures are still in good condition today. The artists usually delivered the painting with a carved wooden frame, often in the so called Chinese Chippendale Style (they imitated the Western tradition of framing and furniture design). We have to note on this occasion that the Chinese artists also copied Ship Portraits by Western artists. Information about the artists can also be found in our book "Ship Portrait Artists".

Image of a China Trade Painting

Ship Portrait of a British Barque - China Trade Artist ca. 1865-1870, the vessel under nearly full sail at sea with a small Chinese boat in the background - indistinctly inscribed with the ship`s name on the bow - Oil on canvas - ca. 18 by 24 inch. (45 x 60 cm) - Private Collection, Nova Scotia, Canada
-
Note:
This is a remarkable fine executed portrait of the vessel in the tradition of the mid 19th Century China Trade Artists. There are small figures (the captain and several seaman) shown on board and its has a special appeal with its slight on-deck-view which makes the painting more lively. The vessel itself is also quite attractive with his white and black hull. Click on the image to see larger illustrations. Photo Copyright is with the FineArtEmporium.
