Baumbach" and inscribed by the artist with location and date "Rom, 1834" - cleaned and good condition - original wooden frame - Price (collection in Hamburg): on request

Note:
The artist painted this scene from his own experience while he stayed in Rome, Italy 1834. He studied at the Academy in Dresden from 1819 on and later became a student of famous Gottfried Schadow in Dusseldorf. After his travels in Italy (1833 and 1834) he worked in Munich (where he became member of the Munich Art Club), Oldenburg (where he became Court Painter) and Hamburg (where eg. this painting was exhibited at Commeter). He also exhited in Dresden and in Berlin at the Academy. This painting fits perfect for a living room with light colors and in combination with antique and/or modern furniture. Provenance: Private Collection, Dusseldorf, previously exhibited at Gallery Commeter, Hamburg. This work left behind the ascetic and religious art of the Nazarener Circle (which he knew through Schadow and the German Artists in Rome) to perfectly express the Biedermeier Desire of Romantic Beauty in Italy.

More Biographical information on the artist: Works by Karl Baumbach can also be found in Museums, eg. at the Castle in Eutin and at the Landes-Gewerbe-Mus. in Stuttgart. The Ouevre of the artist was quite limited and we have not noticed that a comparable work by him appeared on the art market in the last 50 years. See here an article about the Sale of a Roman Lady Portrait, painted by his teacher Schadow which was discovered in a Private Collection and sold in Cologne back in 1998 for EUR 77000 (ca.
