Notes:
Buttersworth served in the Navy and started his profession as a marine artist after his discharge in 1800. In his best works he combined high artistic performance with the deep knowledge of his former profession. Some of his paintings are rather weak and also wrongly attributed paintings are on the market. He had a son (Thomas Buttersworth Junior) who worked in the same style and quality It is generally very difficult to judge if the painting is done by the father or the son. Information about the artist and his oeuvre can also be found in our book "Ship Portrait Artists".
