Italian View

View of the Harbor of Civitavechia (Italy), mid 19th Century - with a Latin rigged sailing boat or ship at anchor, two men working in the foreground and a Fort in the background - Watercolor on paper, 17 x 23 cm (7 by 9 in), with the passepartout and frame 38 x 48 cm (15 by 19 in) - inscribed on the left "Civita Vechia" (in ink) - light age toning and few traces of dust, otherwise good to very good condition, framed in a new bird`s eye maple frame under glass - Private Collection New York City, USA

Note: We suppose this work has been executed from the style either by a French or German artist. In the 19th Century it was common for academy trained artists to visit Italy for studies. Anyway this is a rare motif since the harbour of Civitavechia was not often depicted in this period.

This calm and romantic picture with warm colors from the old days of shipping under sail is a nice historical view of this ancient harbour. Please note, that some of the photos contains reflections on the glass (eg. at the right side of the sky).
