Eckersberg was and is the most important marine artist in Denmark. He represents the Golden Age of the Danish Realistic Art in the first half of the 19th Century and was an important teacher for several artists at the Academy in Copenhagen, where he worked as a Professor and later became the Director. He exhibited from 1806 on at the Charlottenborg in Copenhagen as well as at other places (eg. 1830 in Dresden, Germany). His style is very realistic with phantastic details of the ships he depicted and mainly light colors in his marine paintings. He signed "C.W. Eckersberg" or with his initials and many works are dated. |
