Notes:

Edgar was a full time ship portrait artist and stayed in Sydney and Newcastle, Australia. He often depicted the last of the larger sailing vessels, like the four-masted steel ships. He preferred oil either on board or on canvas of medium (i.e. 56 x 76 cm) or larger size (i.e. 61 x 92 cm) and his paintings are usually very accurate and detailed. Otherwise his style is similar to other Australian artists of the period, like Borstel and Temple West. In 1908 and 1912 he visited San Francisco and settled in this town after 1918. The local Maritime Museum holds three works by him. He used a "fresh" light palette, depicting the ship on a sunny day. Information about the artist and his oeuvre can also be found in our book "Ship Portrait Artists". |
