Art Gallery of Old Ship Portraits and Marine Paintings

View of Frederiksted Harbor, St. Croix, around 1900 - sunshine view with a white-hulled Danish Naval Steam and Sail Ship in the center, surrounded by other local and international shipping - Oil on board - 41 by 52 cm (16 by 20 1/2 in), with frame 53 x 64 cm (21 by 25 in) - unsigned - in good condition and with bright colors - original gilt wooden frame - Private Collection

Note: The three Caribbean Islands of St. Thomas, St. John and St. Croix were Danish West Indian colonies until sold to the United States of America in 1917 for $ 25 million. Today they are known as the U.S. Virgin Islands. While St. Thomas appears occasionally on 19th Century paintings by Danish artists, period views of St. Croix are very rare. This painting was probably done by a retired officer or captain (seafarer), the style is a little naive, but charming.
