Notes:
|
Fritz Melbye was the youngest of the three brothers (the others are Vilhelm Melbye and Anton Melbye) and painted in the beginning also seascapes in the family tradition. After 1858 he preferred more landscapes, coastal and town views from the exotic places in the Caribbean, China and Venezuela, where he stayed for a long time of his life. He preferred a realistic style, often also with romantic scenes. Fritz Melbye exhibited from 1849-1858 at Charlottenborg in Copenhagen and overseas he was the first teacher of the French Impressionist Pissarro. He usually signed his paintings with his full name ("Fritz Melbye") and there appeared already fakes of his paintings on the art market. |
