Fritz Müller was sea captain and private teacher for nautical practice by profession. He nearly exclusively portrayed the larger local vessels in a well balanced composition with a lively background, e.g. a harbour view or other shipping. He later moved to the United States where he joined the Union troops and was apparently killed in action during the civil war. Fritz Müller (German, 1814 - ca. 1865) - Ship Portrait of the Brigg MARIANNE 1854 – The Brig of Bremen in the Channel with another Schooner of Bremen beyond - Oil on canvas – 58 x 82,5 cm (22 7/8 x 32 1/2 in.) – signed "Fritz .Müller" and dated – The Werder Collection Germany Note: The *Marianne* was built in 1843 at the shipyard H.F.Ulrichs, Vegesack for the shipping company B.Grovermann & Co, Bremen, 163 GRT. Sold in 1864 to Gebr. Focke und G. Smidt, Bremen. The Captains were August Brinkama, Theod. Prange, Gerh. Wallrafe, Herm. Renjes und Herm. Hinr. Claussen. The vessel stranded in March 1857 on Tershelling while on her way from Cardiff to Bremen. |
