Additional Note: There is a piece of paper attached to the back of the frame which reads as follows: "Ship Orpheus. In the spring of 1859 Capt. Laban Howes took command of the ship Orpheus of 1285 tons, owned by William F. Weld and Co., of Boston. April 8th he sailed from New York and arrived in San Francisco August 1st. he resigned from this ship in 1861." Captain Howes lived in Dennis, MA (Cape Cod - USA)
