China Trade Artist (Canton, ca. 1850) - Ship Portrait of a Danish full-rigged Ship in the Pearl River, ca. 1850-60 – The Ship under full sail at calm sea on its way to Canton with various Chinese / other European shipping and the shore of the Chinese Coast in the background, romantic early evening impression – Oil on canvas – 45 x 59 cm (17 3/4 x 23 1/4 in.), with frame 56 x 70 cm (22 x 27 1/2 in.) – in an original Chinese frame with walnut veneer and marquetry of jacaranda and other wood as well as gilted lines, covered with shellac - Private Collection, MD, USA

Note: A fine early China Trade painting in good condition, normal fine age crackle of varnish all over (not visible from normal viewing distance), an area of slightly stronger crackle in the lower water section and left low of the bow, has been restored professionally: relined, repairs and inpaint above the bow and within the first sails and on the left side at the area above and within the Chinese boat. China Trade artist - View of the Pearl River Delta - China Trade Artist, ca. 1860-70 - in the foreground a Chinese village near the water with local people and a boat landing on the right side, Oilpainting on canvas, 7 7/8 by 11 3/4 in. (20 x 30 cm) and with the frame 11 1/2 by 15 1/4 in. (29 x 39 cm) - Condition: good condition (usual craquelure, under UV lamp visible is only slight repainting in minor areas, margins of canvas have been fixed), this painting is in a period frame, which is not a Chinese frame - Private Collection Great Britain (UK)

Note:
This is a remarkable fine executed portrait of the vessel in the tradition of the mid 19th Century China Trade Artists. There are small figures (the captain and several seaman) shown on board and its has a special appeal with its slight on-deck-view which makes the painting more lively. Nam Cheong or Workshop (Chinese, fl. 1845-1870) - Ship Portrait of the British (or Canadian) barque *Crayfish* in the Chinese Sea, ca. 1868 - the barque is shown at sea near an Island and with a junk and paddle steamer in the far distance - Oil on canvas on original China Trade stretcher, 46 by 60 cm (18 by 23 5/8 inch), with frame 56 x 69 cm (22 by 27 inch) - inscribed on the bow with the ship`s name - light usual China Trade crackle (in the sea and hull), cleaned, only few areas with inpaint, good condition - Private Collection, Indianapolis, USA

Note: Nam Cheong worked in Whampoa, Hong Kong and rarely signed his works. This painting can be attributed to him or to a member of his workshop. It is executed on the typical thin canvas and in nearly original condition and without extensive crackle. It was previously framed and preserved under glass. China Trade Artist (active ca. 1877) - Ship Portrait of the German Bark ADOLPH of Hamburg 1877, the vessel with reduced sails in stormy seas - inscribed on a brass plaque "H.C. Stülcken Bark Adolph 1877" - Oil on silk - 45 x 59 cm (17 3/4 x 23 1/4 in.) - The Werder Collection, Germany

Note: The Bark *Adolph* was built on the shipping company´s own shipyard H.C.Stülcken Wwe. The following captains in command were: G. Horn, C.R.H. Mohr, J.E.F. Westergaard und Cl. Paulsen. While keeping her original name the vessel was sold to H. Hansen & Co in Lillesand (Norway) in 1898 where it was in use at least until 1903. Click on the image to enlarge the picture.

The Barque Kriemhild was built 1884 by Germania for Matzen in Hamburg and sailed for this company until 1900. In German: Originales Schiffsportrait bzw. Kapitänsbild der Bark Kriemhild, die 1884 von der Schiffsbau Act. Ges. Germania für die Reederei C.M. Matzen in Hamburg gebaut wurde. Die Bark war dort von 1884 bis 1900 im Einsatz. Lai Fong Painting

Lai Fong (Calcutta, fl. 1887-1910) - Ship Portrait of the Scotish four-masted barque *Dowan Hill* in the Indian Ocean, ca. 1895 - the barque is shown on the high sea with a steamer in the far distance - Oil on canvas on original China Trade stretcher, 45 by 60 cm (17 3/4 by 23 5/8 inch), with frame 52 x 67 cm (20 1/2 by 26 3/8 inch) - inscribed on the bow with the ship`s name - usual China Trade crackle (not extensive), small repair in the sky, only few areas with inpaint, good condition, period frame - Private Collection Germany

Note: This China Trade painting can clearly be attributed to Lai Fong, who worked from 1890 to 1910 in Calcutta. The Dowan Hill was built in 1893 and is flying the house flag of J.R. Note: A light, brilliant and strong color work with a romantic touch in the left sky. Detailled execution - and as it cannot often be seen at China Trade paintings - without extensive crackle and in the original Chinese frame. Paintings like this are scarce. Note: A typical China Trade ship portrait with great detail and in good condition. Provenance: previously in the collection of Mr. L. Thomsen in Denmark. Note: The Steamer *Ingraban* was built by Blohm & Voss in Hamburg for the Shipping Company J.P.Massmann & Co of Heiligenhafen. This small shipping company ran three ships on the route to China. A sister ship was the INGO. The INGRABAN was sold to Japan in 1900 and was renamed YOKO MARU. She met her fate in December 1901 in the port of Osaka, being destroyed through fire.
