Brought up in a familiy of marine artist ( see the entry on Thomas S. and Thomas J. B.) he started painting at the age of twenty, working in the style of his ancestors. In 1846 he moved to N.Y. and "managed to combine the excitement, movement, and atmosphere of a ship with the veracity of a ship portraitist" (Richard B. Grassby).
