Notes:
Hermann Eschke was 1841-1845 student of the Academy in Berlin and 1845-48 trained by Wilhelm Krause. In 1849 he studied in Paris at the marine artist Lepoittevin. He travelled along the coasts of the Northern Sea, the Baltic Sea and the Mediterreanean Sea. In 1855 he founded his studio in Berlin, where he trained also his two sons (Oscar and Richard) and two students, who became marine artists: Louis Douzette and Carl Salzmann. Hermann Eschke preferred to paint coastal and harbor scenes, often with impressive light effects or shown in moonshine. Most of his works show motifs from the Baltic coast. From 1856 on he exhibited in Berlin, Vienna, Cologne, at the world exhibition in Paris 1867, in Dresden, Münich and Duesseldorf. In 1881 he was appointed Professor by the academy and his works can be found today in the museums of Schwerin, Riga, Stettin, Oldenburg and Sydney.
