Notes:
The father of Heinrich Andreas Sophus Petersen portrayed the ships often in two positions, sometimes with a pilot ship nearby and/or coastal background (eg. Heligoland). All of his paintings are executed in oil on canvas. He worked for German and foreign captains of all nations who visited Hamburg. Several of his ship portraits were executed in co-operation with his half brother P.C. Holm. Information about the artist and his oeuvre can also be found in our book "Ship Portrait Artists".

Note: Das erste Schiff des Hamburger Reeders Eduard Beatus Crasemann, die *Carlota*, wurde in Neuhof bei Hamburg von Ernst Dreyer erbaut. Kapitän T.S. Groot aus Westerland / Sylt führte den Segler 1859-62 nach Melbourne und Liverpool, 1862-63 nach Islay / Peru, Callao und Rotterdam. Die letzte Reise ging 1863 nach Singapur, Hong Kong und Akyab. In Hamburg zurück wurde die Bark am 19.9.1865 an Reeder Kirch in Altona verkauft. Die Nachkommen des Kapitäns T.S. Groot aus Keitum / Sylt veräußerten das auf dem Dachboden lagernde Gemälde 1975. Seyersted" 1850, the vessel under full sail and showing the ensign of Hamburg off Heligoland, on the right side the steamer to Hull - signed "L. Petersen" and dated - Oil on canvas - 47 x 64 cm - relined, restored, in a period frame - Private Collection Northern Germany

Note: The *Elbe* was built 1850 in Kiel by Hilbert for the shipping company of captain F.C. Sejersted who was also the master of the vessel and who co-operated with the merchant Theodor Wille of Hamburg. It measured 26 meters and could carry about 210 tons of goods. It transported mainly coffee and sugar from Brazil and passed Cape Horn five times. From 1862 the brigg was used for a coastal service in China and in September 1863 destroyed by a taifun (all men were saved). Click here or on the image to see a larger illustration. Lofgren* under sail off Cuxhaven 1839 - the vessel is shown at good weather conditions near the entrance to the North Sea - Oil on canvas, 42 by 54 cm (16 1/2 by 21 1/4 inch), with frame 55 x 66 cm (21 1/2 by 26 inch) - signed, dated and inscribed with title, numberflag "52." at first mast - relined, cleaned, retouch, paint is thin in places, generally in good condition considering the age, new 24 Carat gilt frame - Private Collection New York City, USA

Note: The Brigg *Mathilde* was built in 1852 in Westervik (Sweden) and acquired in 1861 by the shipping company Joachim Reimers in Hamburg through the broker Brauss in Hamburg. The vessel made only one journey, Petersen´s journey to Rio Grande do S. from 1861-1864 was ill-fated and MATHILDE was lost at sea on Sept. 4th, 1864 off Tamsin (China). Note: The Schooner Brigg *Zanzibar* was built at the Dreyer shipyard on Neuhof in the year 1860 for the shipping company Oswald in Hamburg. The Captains were J.F. Hell 1860-61, V.H.B. v. Rauchhaupt 1861-62, F. Pauls 1862-64 and F. Timm 1865. The Vessel was sailing the route Hamburg-Zanzibar and has benn sold to Therkelsen in Horsens in 1865.
