Notes:
He used to portray the ship in one position at the open sea, the ship´s and captain´s name is usually mentioned in the water section along the bottom. He received commissions by captains of all European nations and was a very productive painter indeed. Most of his clients came from Great Britain and Germany and some from other European countries including Scandinavia. All of his works are signed, we did not notice unsigned works so far. Ship Portrait of the German four-masted Barque *Gustav* at sea ca. 1910 - the large sailing ship is shown under full sail at moderate sea - Oil on board, 38 by 60 cm (15 by 24 inch), with frame 49 x 71 cm (19 by 28 inch) - signed lower left "T.G. Purvis" and inscribed on the bow with the ship`s name - cleaned, board is partly uneven due to age, in an old frame - Private Collection, Richmond, USA

Note: Purvis was a busy ship portrait artist, working in Cardiff, London and Bristol. He portrayed some of the largest sailing vessels which ever crossed the Oceans. Most of his paintings were executed between 1890 and the Great War (1914). This painting shows a realistic sea and a detailled handling of the huge Bark. Click here to see larger illustrations. Note: From the house flag and funnel ensign we learn that this steamer belonged to the fleet of the Flensburg shipping company E. Schuldt, which is today located in Hamburg. Note: A typical work by the artist with convincing dark-light contrasts and a liveful atmosphere. The *Wandsbek* (built 1892 in Liverpool) was one the fascinating Windjammers around the turn of the Century and in service for Philadelphia, Southern America, India and the South Sea.
