Petrus Weyts *Vue sur le Port d`Ostende*, painted in the 1830s – with a portrait of the Belgian Bark *Jean Key* entering the harbor of Ostend – Reverse on Glass painting - 54 x 70 cm – inscribed with title in the lower center, name of the vessel inscribed on the flag – good condition, in the original veneered walnut frame – European Collection

Note: Although not signed, this picture can be attributed firmly to Petrus Weyts, who started his career as a ship portrait artist in Ostend. The Bark *Jean Key* (built 1829) was the first transatlantic vessel from Belgium, who sailed to America with cargo, mail and emigrants - we are grateful to Dr. Pieter De Pauw, who provided information on this painting. John Loos - Portrait of the Canadian full-rigged Ship *La Gloire* in 1862 - the vessel is shown under full sail off the Channel coastline near Calais – signed, dated and inscribed "Antwerp" lower right - Oil on canvas - 52 x 76 cm (20 1/2 by 30 inch) – Private Collection, Northern America

Note: The wooden ship *La Gloire* was built in 1862 in Hantsport, Nova Scotia for the Churchill Shipping Co. and measured 1,138 tons. The vessel was used for the Trans-Atlantic trade to Europe and for other routes. This is a very well done and early example of a work by John Loos of Antwerp, Belgium. Note: The "Aganora" was built 1865 in Guernsey (Great Britain) and has been sold 1870 to the West Indies, so this painting must have been executed between 1865 and 1870. With the Attribution to the artist Frederik Tudgay the FineArtEmporium agree and follows a written statement previously given by Christies (TM) London some years ago. Note: The steamer *Lavinia* was built in 1887 on the shipyard of the Flensburger Schiffsbau-Gesellschaft for the shipping company A.Kirsten in Hamburg, using an iron construction. Captains: Grunden 88/90, M. Crety 91/95, W. Richert 95. The Steamer was sold to Kalikanoff in Wladiwostock in 1896. Click on the image to enlarge the photo.
