Note: Many Pirates in Algier and Northern Africa were captured by American and European forces during the attacks in the 1830s (eg. USS Constitution was originally built for this purpose). Anyway and - according to reports from British Naval Officers - several Pirates / Corsairs were still active in the remaining part of the 19th Century and as late as until 1900. The Straits of Gibraltar at the entrance to the Mediterranean Sea was a preferred place where they were seeking merchant ships from Europe and America to enter and capture ship and crew. British Naval Ships from Gibraltar were on duty to chase the Pirates.

European Artist - View of Frederiksted Harbor, St. Croix, around 1900 - sunshine view with a white-hulled Danish Naval Steam and Sail Ship in the center, surrounded by other local and international shipping - Oil on board, 41 by 52 cm (16 by 20 1/2 in), with frame 53 x 64 cm (21 by 25 in) - unsigned - in good condition and with bright colors - original gilt wooden frame - Private Collection

Note: The three Caribbean Islands of St. Thomas, St. John and St. Croix were Danish West Indian colonies until sold to the United States of America in 1917 for $ 25 million. Today they are known as the U.S. Virgin Islands. While St. Thomas appears occasionally on 19th Century paintings by Danish artists, period views of St. Croix are very rare. This painting was probably done by a retired officer or captain (seafarer), the style is a little naive, but charming. Click here or on the image to see larger illustrations.
