Image of Friedrich Kloss Painting

Frederik Kloss - A Norwegian Pilot Boat and a Danish Fregate off the Norwegian Coast 1843, signed "F.T. Kloss" and dated, Oil on canvas, 60 x 90 cm, very good condition, original frame, the possession of a Private Collection in Sweden

Note: The figures in the boat show the typical Eckersberg style of the works by the artist before 1850. This painting was exhibited at Charlottenborg and once belonged to the King of Denmark. Click here or on the image to see larger illustrations. Photo Copyright is with the Fine Art Emporium.

Italian View

Continental artist - View of the Harbor of Civitavechia (Italy), mid 19th Century - with a Latin rigged sailing boat or ship at anchor, two men working in the foreground and a Fort in the background - Watercolor on paper, 17 x 23 cm (7 by 9 in), with the passepartout and frame 38 x 48 cm (15 by 19 in) - inscribed on the left "Civita Vechia" (in ink) - light age toning and few traces of dust, otherwise good to very good condition, framed in a new bird`s eye maple frame under glass - Private Collection New York City, USA

Note: We suppose this work has been executed from the style either by a French or German artist. In the 19th Century it was common for academy trained artists to visit Italy for studies. Anyway this is a rare motif since the harbour of Civitavechia was not often depicted in this period. Click here or on the image to see larger illustrations. Charles Shlee Ship Portrait

Charles Slee (Shlee) - Portrait of the British Brig *Thomas Chalmers commanded by James Duncan of Dundee* - the vessel is shown entering Riga under full sail - watercolor, pen and ink on stretched canvas - signed l/c "From Charles Shlee Ship Drawer at Riga 1850" and inscribed with title to scale - 51 x 66 cm (20 x 26 inch) - in the original birdeye`s maple veneered frame - North American Collection

Note: The wooden 197 ton Brig *Thomas Chalmers* was built in St Martins, New Brunswick, Canada in 1847 and registered at St John, New Brunswick on June 26th, 1847. It was sold to James Duncan of Dundee, Scotland and registered at Dundee in 1847. Pictures by this Riga based artist are quite rare and this is a nice example of his work. Image of Pringle Painting

John Balfour Pringle - Portrait of a Nova Scotia Barque under full sail, 1868 - the Bark is shown off the Aisla Craig – signed and inscribed "Greenock" - Oil on canvas - 48 x 76 cm (19 by 30 inch) – Private Collection, Northern America

Note: Alisa Craig is a familiar land mark often seen in paintings of the Clyde River School. The painting shows the vessel flying a Lovitt Shipping Company flag. There were several Lovitts who were ship owners in Yarmouth, Nova Scotia in the 19th C. Their house flags varied from a red "L" to a blue "WDL" on white grounds. Without code flags or the name of the vessel on the bow, identification is difficult. There were three Lovitt Company barques in Greenock in 1868: the George Bell, the Francis Bourneuf and the Agnes M.Lovitt. Click here or on the image to see larger illustrations.

Roberti (Italian, 19th C.) - Coastal View of Capri with Fishermen off the Rocks, ca. 1870 to 1880 - shown on a calm, quiete summer morning - Oil on canvas, 31 by 53 cm (12 by 21 inch), with frame 41 x 64 cm (16 by 25 inch) - signed lower right "Roberti" - cleaned and good condition - in a period frame - Private Collection Växjö, Sweden

Schiffswerft

Scandinavian artist - Large Oilpainting of Troense Shipyard in the Svendborg-Sund, 1885, showing also a portrait of the sailing vessel "Anna", several men working on the right side at a hulk of a wooden sailing vessel, romantic early evening impression, on the left side another shipyard place, signed lower left with monogram E.G., Oil on canvas - 73 x 107 cm (28 3/4 x 42 inch) and with the frame 84 x 117 cm (33 x 46 inch), slight crackle, repair and inpaint in few places, cleaned and otherwise in good condition, gilted period frame - Private Collection, Halifax, NS (Canada)

Note: Shipyards were in general only rarely painted. And although the style of this painting is a little naive - this is an historical document of the period of the wooden sailing vessels. With the calm and romantic atmosphere it expresses the spirit of the golden days of sails which were already heading to an end in the 1880s. Click here or on the image to see larger illustrations. Image of Askevold Painting

Anders M. Askevold (Norwegian, 1834-1900) - Scene in a Norwegian Fjord with Boats and Figures 1885, a Country House on the right side, signed "A. Askevold" and dated, Oil on canvas, 56 x 90 cm, good condition, the possession of a Private Collection in Norway

Note: A typical composition by the artist with a scene from his home country. Click here or on the image to see larger illustrations. Photo Copyright is with the Fine Art Emporium.

Monte Carlo / Monaco View

August Fischer (1854-1921) - Important Coastal View of Monte Carlo, Monaco - 1894 - sunshine view of the "Rock" in Monaco with the Grimaldi Palace and the Bay which is today the Port de Fontvieille (private Yacht Harbor) - Oil on canvas on original stretcher, 49 by 74 cm (19 by 29 in.), with frame 62 x 88 cm (24 1/2 by 35 in.) - signed and dated "Aug. Fischer, Monaco, (18)94" lower right - outstanding condition, no damage or retouch, cleaned, original frame (with slight wear) - Private Collection, Monaco - Show me larger color illustrations

Note: As we note on this painting: Towards the end of the 19th Century this town and bay was a quite calm and romantic coastal place with a few buildings only. There are olive trees in the foreground and there is only one two-masted local sailing vessel on the sea. Photo Copyright is with the FineArtEmporium.

European Artist - View of Frederiksted Harbor, St. Croix, around 1900 - sunshine view with a white-hulled Danish Naval Steam and Sail Ship in the center, surrounded by other local and international shipping - Oil on board, 41 by 52 cm (16 by 20 1/2 in), with frame 53 x 64 cm (21 by 25 in) - unsigned - in good condition and with bright colors - original gilt wooden frame - Private Collection

Note: The three Caribbean Islands of St. Thomas, St. John and St. Croix were Danish West Indian colonies until sold to the United States of America in 1917 for $ 25 million. Today they are known as the U.S. Virgin Islands. While St. Thomas appears occasionally on 19th Century paintings by Danish artists, period views of St. Croix are very rare. This painting was probably done by a retired officer or captain (seafarer), the style is a little naive, but charming. Click here or on the image to see larger illustrations.
