Tindall Ship Portrait

Benjamin Tindall (British, fl. 1846-1880) - Ship Portrait of the Norwegian Barque *Nordsternen* off an Island near Hull, ca. 1860 - the sailing ship is shown under full sail in two positions off an Island in the Northern Sea - Oil on canvas, 61 by 92 cm (24 by 36 inch), with frame 74 x 106 cm (29 by 42 inch) - inscribed on bow and on a flag with the name of ship and ident. No. M 77 - Private Collection New Jersey, USA

Note: A typical ship portrait by Tindall and an interesting early oil painting of large size. A typical feature of his paintings is to show the portrayed vessel in two positions off a coastal point and to paint three seagulls sailing over the waves in the foreground. Paintings by Tindall can be found in numerous Maritime Museums around the world, most notable in the Alands Maritime Museum in Mariehamn, which has no less than 14 paintings by him. Lorenz Petersen (1803-1870) - Ship Portrait of the Danish Bark *Otto geführt von Capt. J. Ahlmann* under sail off Heligoland ca. 1860 - the vessel is shown at good weather conditions near the Island in the North Sea with a Steamer from Hamburg in the left background - Oil on canvas - 47 by 64,5 cm (18 1/2 by 25 1/2 inch), with frame ca. 66 x 84 cm (26 by 33 inch) - inscribed on the left with with title - original canvas (unlined), cleaned, only little retouch, in generally good to very good condition, 19th Century gold frame - The Baltic Sea Collection

Note: The steamship shown is most likely the packet ship to Heligoland, which appears often in paintings by the Petersen / Holm artists. This work convinces with a very detailled depiction of the vessel as well as with a realistic handling of the sea and sky. There is only a trace visible from the signature on the right, but the execution, style and title writing on the left identifies this anyway as a painting by Lorenz Petersen. Image of Holm Ship Portrait

Peter Christian Holm (German, 1823-1888) - Ship Portrait of the *Oder* 1861 – The full-rigged HAPAG Packet-Ship on her yoyage from New York to Hamburg off Heligoland (right), a steamer passing on the left, it is flying the Hamburg flag, the HAPAG ensign and the signs of the Marryot Code – Oil on canvas – 46 x 64 cm (18 x 25 1/4 in.) – signed lower right "P. Holm" and dated 1861 – good condition (relined, crackle, slight inpaint in the sky), valuable period frame - Private Collection

Note: A magnificent, lively and bright ship portrait by Holm, who worked usually together with Lorenz Petersen and later with his son Heinrich. The "Oder" was built 1851 for the HAPAG (Hamburg-Amerikanische Packetfahrt Aktien-Gesellschaft) and sold in 1868 to R.V. Beselin. One year later it was lost off Key West. It brought during their service a large number of European emigrants to the United States of America. Click here or on the image to see larger illustrations.

(45 x 60 cm) - Private Collection, Nova Scotia, Canada
-
Note:
This is a remarkable fine executed portrait of the vessel in the tradition of the mid 19th Century China Trade Artists. There are small figures (the captain and several seaman) shown on board and its has a special appeal with its slight on-deck-view which makes the painting more lively. The vessel itself is also quite attractive with his white and black hull. Click on the image to see larger illustrations. Photo Copyright is with the FineArtEmporium.
