works and there has been written extensively
about him and his sons, who continued the

appearing regularly fakes of his works on the
market. Please note that there are reflections
from the glass on the image and that it a little
bit larger than the part shown on this picture.

Lorenz
Petersen (1803-1870) - Ship Portrait of the
Danish Bark *Otto geführt von Capt. J. Ahlmann*
under sail off Heligoland ca. 1860 - the
vessel is shown at good weather conditions near
the Island in the North Sea with a Steamer from
Hamburg in the left background - Oil on canvas -
47 by 64,5 cm (18 1/2 by 25 1/2 inch), with frame
ca. 66 x 84 cm (26 by 33 inch) - inscribed on the
left with with title - original canvas (unlined),
cleaned, only little retouch, in generally good to
very good condition, 19th Century gold frame - The
Baltic Sea Collection
Note: The steamship
shown is most likely the packet ship to
Heligoland, which appears often in paintings by
the Petersen / Holm artists. This work convinces
with a very detailled depiction of the vessel as
well as with a realistic handling of the sea and
sky. There is only a trace visible from the
signature on the right, but the execution, style
and title writing on the left identifies this
anyway as a painting by Lorenz Petersen. Click here

Provenance:
the descendants of Capt. Ahlmann * Please see the
following position for the matching Captain`s Cup
(Kapitänstasse) *

Captain`s Porcelain Cup with
a painted Portrait of the Danish Bark *Otto* in
choppy seas ca. 1860 - the vessel is shown
under reduced sails on the open sea - Porcelain
Cup with Saucer and Silver Spoon - the cup 9,2 cm
(3 1/2 in) high and diameter of 11,5 cm (4 1/2
in), the saucer with diameter of 16,5 cm (6 1/2
in), total high of cup and saucer 10,5 cm (4 1/4
in) - inscribed on the feet of cup "Otto" and
signed at reverse bottom "J.G. Hauthal" - original
condition as preserved by the Captain`s family,
gilting at upper margins partial rubbed, cleaned,
no repair or repaint - date 1860 on saucer - The
Baltic Sea Collection
Note: The Saucer is
marked on reverse bottom with the maker`s sign TPM
and the silver spoon is solid 800 Silver with
hallmarks Crown + Half-Moon and maker`s sign SGS.
Hauthal was a well known porcelain painter from
Hamburg, who obviously also sometimes co-operated
with the Petersen/Holm artists. We suppose the
painting and the cup have been made during the
same visit of Capt. Ahlmann in Hamburg. This would
also explain the different view of the ship under
reduced sails.

Edourd Adam. - Ship Portrait
of the *Menai Straits off Cape de la
Heve* 1878 – The British Bark under
full sail passing Cape Heve (near Le Havre), a pilot
boat arriving in the background – Oil on canvas – 62
x 92 cm (24 1/2 x 36 in.) – signed lower right "Ed
Adam", dated "1878" and further inscribed "Havre" –
good condition, not relined, one repair in the left
sky section, slight inpaint, usual crackle, nice old
gold frame
Note: An early and
very well done work by the famous French ship
portrait artist with a romantic early evening
impression. Paintings with a quality like this one
were the reason why Adam Senior has been elected
as official marine painter for the French
government and why he is represented in the Musee
de la Marine in Paris with a permanent exhibition.

Jorgen
Dahl (1825-1890) - Ship Portrait of the
Danish steamer *Kobenhavn* under sail and steam
off Skagen lighthouse 1883 - the transition

signed and dated lower left "J. Dahl 1883" &
inscribed on the bow with the ship`s name - good
condition, original frame
Note: An impressive
portrait of the large, threemasted steamship with
an interesting background (Skagen is the place
where the Northern Sea / Atlantic meets the Baltic
Sea). This painting furthermore convinces with a
realistic water, a detailled execution of the ship
and interesting contrasts and colors in the sky

William
Howard Yorke (British, 1847-1921) - Ship
Portrait of the Brigantine *Arvid - Kaptn.
J.E. Hellgren 1883* - the sailing ship is
shown at fair weather and under full sail off
Holyhead and the South Stack Lighthouse, Anglesey
heading for Brazil, with other sailing vessels in
the distance - Oil on canvas, old relining - 50 by
75 cm (20 by 30 in), with frame 62 x 89 cm (24 1/2
x 35 in) - signed l. r. "W.H. Yorke, L`pool 1883"
and inscribed with title
Note: A characteristic
ship portrait by this artist who loved so much to
portray sailing vessels (instead of steamers) and
executed in his best period (the 1880s). This
painting was carefully cleaned and there is only
little inpaint in the water at two areas and in
front of the bow. Gladly this artwork has not
suffered from Overcleaning - which can happen so
easy with Yorke paintings because the color layers
are thin - which you can see especially in the
well preserved water, sky and in the details of
the ships (rigging lines etc.). This is a Premium
Artwork in good condition. Click here or on the image to see larger

Luigi
Roberto (Italian, fl. 1874-1891) -
Ship Portrait of the Swedish Transition Steamer "SS
Freja (of) Stockhlom (sic) 1887" – the vessel
with auxiliary sails set in the Bay of Naples with
Vesuvius beyond (hardly visible) – Gouache – 41 x 58
cm (16 1/8 x 22 7/8 in.) – signed, inscribed and
dated "L. Roberto, Napoli 1887" – good condition
(the background partly faded, traces of the age),
passepartout, modern gold frame
Note: Luigi Roberto is - beside of the De Simone Family
- the best known Ship Portrait Artist who worked
in Naples and produced detailled portraits of
the sail or steam vessels and yachts, which
visited this Italian port. The Gouache technique
is typical for the Italian ship portraits of
this period and in contrast to watercolors the
appearance of Gouaches is brighter and the
colors are opaque. Click on the image or
