William Howard Yorke (British, 1847-1921) - Ship Portrait of the Brigantine *Arvid - Kaptn. J.E. Hellgren 1883* - the sailing ship is shown at fair weather and under full sail off Holyhead and the South Stack Lighthouse, Anglesey heading for Brazil, with other sailing vessels in the distance - Oil on canvas, old relining - 50 by 75 cm (20 by 30 in), with frame 62 x 89 cm (24 1/2 x 35 in) - signed l. r. "W.H. Yorke, L`pool 1883" and inscribed with title

Note: A characteristic ship portrait by this artist who loved so much to portray sailing vessels (instead of steamers) and executed in his best period (the 1880s). This painting was carefully cleaned and there is only little inpaint in the water at two areas and in front of the bow. Gladly this artwork has not suffered from Overcleaning - which can happen so easy with Yorke paintings because the color layers are thin - which you can see especially in the well preserved water, sky and in the details of the ships (rigging lines etc.). This is a Premium Artwork in good condition. Click here or on the image to see larger illustrations. Photo Copyright is with the FineArtEmporium - owned by The Baltic Sea Collection

Schiffswerft

Scandinavian artist - Large Oilpainting of Troense Shipyard in the Svendborg-Sund, 1885, showing also a portrait of the sailing vessel "Anna", several men working on the right side at a hulk of a wooden sailing vessel, romantic early evening impression, on the left side another shipyard place, signed lower left with monogram E.G., Oil on canvas - 73 x 107 cm (28 3/4 x 42 inch) and with the frame 84 x 117 cm (33 x 46 inch), slight crackle, repair and inpaint in few places, cleaned and otherwise in good condition, gilted period frame - Private Collection, Halifax, NS (Canada)

Note: Shipyards were in general only rarely painted. And although the style of this painting is a little naive - this is an historical document of the period of the wooden sailing vessels. With the calm and romantic atmosphere it expresses the spirit of the golden days of sails which were already heading to an end in the 1880s. Click here or on the image to see larger illustrations. Note: An impressive portrait of the large, threemasted steamship with an interesting background (Skagen is the place where the Northern Sea / Atlantic meets the Baltic Sea). This painting furthermore convinces with a realistic water, a detailled execution of the ship and interesting contrasts and colors in the sky (with a romantic touch).
