Note: This painting with the romantic atmosphere is a typical and well executed work from his Oeuvre with interesting sunset light effects on the water and on the starboard side of the Brig. It is possible that it shows an incident from the Danish-Prussian War in 1864, when the Danish forces fighted in the Northern Sea against the Prussian-Austrian fleet. Click on image to enlarge. Note: An early and very well done work by the famous French ship portrait artist with a romantic early evening impression. Paintings with a quality like this one were the reason why Adam Senior has been elected as official marine painter for the French government and why he is represented in the Musee de la Marine in Paris with a permanent exhibition. Italian Naples Ship Portrait

Italian artist (Naples) - Ship Portrait of the Brigantine "Adolph" in the Bay of Naples - ca. 1878 - The vessel is shown under full sail, Vesuvius and other shipping in the distance- , Gouache on paper - inscribed in the centre with the name of the vessel - 48 x 72 cm (19 x 28 inch) plus frame - minor signs of age, otherwise very good condition - Private Collection, Aschaffenburg, Germany - Click here or on the image to see larger illustrations

Note: This painting is framed under the antique glass and a delicate picture. We are currently offering it only for Germany and selected European destinations. The "Adolph" was built in 1867 in Apenrade and measured at 208 Tons. In 1878 it belonged to E.E. Nielsen & Capt. in Rudkobing (Rudkjobing) of Langeland (a Danish Island in the Baltic Sea). It was under the command of Capt. E.A. Hastrup and (read more).

Pirate Sailing Lugger off Gibraltar

Spanish Artist FR - An Algerian Pirate Lugger is chased off Gibraltar, ca. 1880 - the three-masted Corsair Vessel is trying to escape from the British Naval Ship in the left background (which fires out of two cannons), on the right the Rock of Gibraltar - Oil on canvas, 66 by 94 cm (26 by 37 in), with frame 88 x 115 cm (34 5/8 by 45 in) - signed l.r. with monogram "FR" and anchor sign - cleaned, restored and in good condition, bright color, clearly visibel age craquelure throughout, in the (original) heavy mahogony frame - Private Collection Fenland, UK - Click here or on the image to see larger illustrations

Note: Many Pirates in Algier and Northern Africa were captured by American and European forces during the attacks in the 1830s (eg. USS Constitution was originally built for this purpose). Anyway and - according to reports from British Naval Officers - several Pirates / Corsairs were still active in the remaining part of the 19th Century and as late as until 1900. The Straits of Gibraltar at the entrance to the Mediterranean Sea was a preferred place where they were seeking merchant ships from Europe and America to enter and capture ship and crew. British Naval Ships from Gibraltar were on duty to chase the Pirates.



China Trade Painting

Lai Fong attr. (fl. 1880s-1910) - Large Portrait of the Scotish Ship *Janet Cowan* mastering a Storm, ca. 1880s - the large three-masted sailing ship at high sea and with reduced sails - Oil on canvas, 65 by 89 cm (25 / 1/2 by 35 inch), with frame 78 x 102 cm (27 1/2 by 39 inch) - inscribed on the bow with ship`s name - relined, usual China Trade crackle, small sign of age and expert restoration in sky, good condition - Private Collection, Tokyo, Japan

Note:
This China Trade painting can be attributed to Lai Fong, who worked as a China Trade artist in Calcutta. The Janet Cowan was built in 1866 in Greenock (later refit) for the Scotish owner, Shankland in Greenock. It was a large ship of 217 feet and measured at 1278 tons. William Howard Yorke (British, 1847-1921) - Ship Portrait of the Brigantine *Arvid - Kaptn. J.E. Hellgren 1883* - the sailing ship is shown at fair weather and under full sail off Holyhead and the South Stack Lighthouse, Anglesey heading for Brazil, with other sailing vessels in the distance - Oil on canvas, old relining - 50 by 75 cm (20 by 30 in), with frame 62 x 89 cm (24 1/2 x 35 in) - signed l. r. "W.H. Yorke, L`pool 1883" and inscribed with title

Note: A characteristic ship portrait by this artist who loved so much to portray sailing vessels (instead of steamers) and executed in his best period (the 1880s). This painting was carefully cleaned and there is only little inpaint in the water at two areas and in front of the bow. Gladly this artwork has not suffered from Overcleaning - which can happen so easy with Yorke paintings because the color layers are thin - which you can see especially in the well preserved water, sky and in the details of the ships (rigging lines etc.). Sailing Ship Portrait

Geo Johansen (fl. 1893-1903) - Ship Portrait of the Scotish four-masted Barque *Clan Galbraith of Glasgow* at sea ca. 1895 - the large vessel is shown under full sail at the open sea - Oil on board - 42 by 60 cm (16 1/2 by 24 inch), with frame 57 x 77 cm (22 by 30 inch) - signed "Johansen, London" and inscribed with title in the water - cleaned, signs of age and restoration, otherwise ok, original frame - Private Collection

Note:
Johansen was based in London, UK but of Scandinavian origin. Most of his ship portraits were executed in watercolour or gouache, this is in fact the first oilpainting we notice by him. He is represented in the Maritime Museum Troense and his works can also be found in several private collections, mainly in Scandinavia.

Kapitänsbild der Bark Kriemhild, die 1884 von der Schiffsbau Act. Ges. Germania für die Reederei C.M. Matzen in Hamburg gebaut wurde. Die Bark war dort von 1884 bis 1900 im Einsatz. Note: The *Nanny* was bought by shipping company J.W.Burmester in January 1885 in England. The Captains were A.P.H. Baethgen, C. Wilhelmi und B.H. Müller.
